Onslow Memorial Hospital employees are reaching out to local venues to re-introduce CPR techniques to area residents.

Onslow Memorial Hospital Presenting Hands-Only CPR for Community GroupsHands-Only CPR is a new four-step process designed to empower individuals to react swiftly in the event of a cardiac emergency. Early intervention with hands-only CPR has been shown to save lives. “The need for people to know CPR has not changed, and if anything, the need has increased,” said OMH’s Emergency Department Educator, Nancy Pate. “Hands-Only CPR is a way for non-medical bystanders to step up and step in to save a life.”

In collaboration with the Work Place of Choice Committee, the Code Committee, and OMH Emergency Room personnel, Pate and her colleagues will travel across the county to deliver hands-only CPR presentations to community organizations.

“Although the method of CPR has changed, the life-saving outcomes remain the same,” Pate noted.

The new process focuses on recognizing when someone is unresponsive, activating EMS by calling 911 early, and providing Hands-Only CPR. This approach helps bystanders confidently engage until medical personnel arrive on the scene.

“If we can teach Hands-Only CPR to just one person, and that person saves a life, that’s what this effort is truly about,” Pate shared.

These lessons are free and take only 15 to 30 minutes, depending on class size. Churches and civic organizations make excellent venues for these sessions, according to Pate.
