Onslow Memorial Hospital Foundation is excited to announce the annual Miles for Mammos 5K Run, taking place on Saturday, October 19, at 8:00 a.m. at Jacksonville Commons. This event brings together volunteers from Onslow Memorial Hospital and community members to celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month and honor survivors of the disease.
The anticipated turnout includes over 300 runners, all coming together to raise funds and awareness for Julie’s Pink Warrior Project, which provides free mammograms for residents who are uninsured or underinsured. This initiative is named in memory of Julie Zerkle, who lost her battle with cancer. Julie’s indomitable spirit continues to inspire the Onslow Memorial Hospital Cancer team’s commitment to making this 5K a cornerstone of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
“Julie’s fight reignited our belief in the power of community and compassion,” said Jennifer Provost, Director of Radiation Oncology at Onslow Memorial Hospital. “Breast cancer affects millions, and our dedicated volunteers and staff are committed to raising awareness, providing support, and offering comprehensive care to those impacted by this devastating disease.”
This year, the event will feature a Health Fair Expo alongside the race. Attendees can participate in health screenings, including breast cancer and stroke screenings, learn hands-only CPR techniques, and receive water safety tips from Emerald Isle Ocean Rescue. Representatives from the Coast Guard, Onslow County Fire Department, Pumpkin Center Fire Department, and Jacksonville Police Department will also be present.
Participants are encouraged to “Wear Pink” to show their support. Event organizers will utilize drones to capture the racers’ journey, adding an exciting visual element to the event. Medals will be awarded to runners, and prizes will be given for categories such as “Most Pink’d Out Person or Team” and “Funniest/Most Creative Team Name” following the race.
Since its inception in 2018, Julie’s Pink Warrior Project has funded over 400 free mammograms for local residents.
The Miles for Mammos 5K Run is a “Bonus Race” in conjunction with the Jacksonville-Onslow Sports Commission Race Series, joining other local events such as the Fuzzy Peach Trail Run on November 2 and the Beat the Bridge 10K/5K on January 11.
Registration for the Miles for Mammos 5K Run is still open. More information and registration details can be found at Onslow Memorial Hospital Foundation.
