The Onslow Memorial Hospital Foundation has received a $20,000 grant from the Philip L. Van Every Foundation to install specialized camera technology in Onslow Memorial Hospital’s Level II Nursery Unit.
The new system will allow parents and approved members of their support network to have secure, around-the-clock, real-time access to view their newborn’s medical care when separation is necessary.

“When the level of medical attention necessitates the mother and her newborn being placed in separate rooms, every moment apart can weigh heavily on the family,” said Dr. John A. Kohler, Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer at Onslow Memorial Hospital. “The technology will allow parents, family, and approved members of the parent’s support systems, around-the-clock, real-time access to view their newborn’s medical care.”
Beyond easing stress and strengthening the bond between parents and their newborns, the Foundation sought funding with Onslow County’s strong military presence in mind.
“This technology allows military family members to remain involved and reassured, even when they have to step away,” said Thomas W. Giffin, Executive Director of the Foundation. “Twenty-four hours a day and regardless of time zone differences and military responsibilities, all vested parties will be able to see their newborn baby and witness the care and support their child is receiving.”
The camera system is also expected to enhance trust and connection between families and the medical team.
“Numerous studies have shown that the camera technology significantly helps to build trust and a sense of connection between the medical care team, the mother, and her support systems,” Giffin added. “In a military community, loved ones can often be located anywhere throughout the country. This new option within the Level II Nursery will be a tremendous benefit to both military and non-military families in our area.”
The funding falls under the Van Every Foundation’s Healthcare and Rehabilitation focus area, which supports programs centered on medical innovation, research, education, rehabilitative care, prevention, wellness, and substance abuse.
“We are grateful to everyone associated with the Van Every Foundation and its grant selection process,” Giffin said. “It is extremely satisfying when a powerful idea is turned into reality thanks to a foundation committed to improving the health and quality of life for individuals residing in North and South Carolina.”
