The Onslow Memorial Hospital (OMH) Foundation has been awarded a $5,000 transportation grant from the American Cancer Society (ACS) to assist local cancer patients facing transportation challenges. This funding will provide essential support in the form of gas cards and cab rides, ensuring that patients in Onslow County can access critical cancer treatments without the burden of travel concerns.

Onslow Memorial Hospital Foundation Receives $5,000 Grant to Support Cancer Patients' Transportation Needs

“Transportation is a significant barrier for many of our patients,” said Thomas Giffin, Executive Director of the OMH Foundation. “We are extremely grateful to the American Cancer Society for this generous grant, which will help ensure that local patients receive the quality cancer care they need.”

The impact of transportation assistance is profound. Studies by the American Cancer Society have shown that cancer survivors who delay care due to a lack of transportation face a significantly higher risk of mortality. By removing this barrier, the OMH Foundation is directly improving health outcomes for the community.

This grant builds on the Foundation’s ongoing commitment to supporting cancer patients. Last year, thanks to a previous ACS grant and an additional $4,500 from local donors, the Foundation provided $7,500 in transportation assistance to patients in need.

“The American Cancer Society’s support will serve those who need it most right here in our county,” Giffin added. “Looking ahead, one of our goals is to expand this transportation program to assist patients in other departments throughout the hospital.”

Onslow Memorial Hospital is a nationally accredited 162-bed medical facility serving Jacksonville and the greater Onslow County area. As an affiliate of UNC Health Care, OMH remains dedicated to providing high-quality, compassionate care to the community.
