Onslow Memorial Hospital Foundation is launching a new scholarship program in honor of Ed Garris, a respected Jacksonville leader and dedicated volunteer. The scholarship will support nursing students at Coastal Carolina Community College who aspire to work at Onslow Memorial Hospital after graduation.

Honoring Ed Garris: A Legacy of Service and Leadership

Ed Garris, who passed away suddenly in February, served as Senior Vice President at First National Bank in Jacksonville and was the sitting Chair of the Onslow Memorial Hospital Foundation Board. His deep commitment to the community was evident in his extensive volunteer work, including serving as past Chairman of the Jacksonville Onslow Economic Development Board, the Jacksonville Onslow Sports Commission, and Treasurer of the Jacksonville Onslow Chamber of Commerce. He was also a longtime member of the Chamber’s Military Affairs Committee.

Garris’ service and dedication earned him numerous accolades, including the Governor’s North Carolina Award for Volunteer Service and the 2019 Jacksonville Onslow Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year. A sustaining member of the Rotary Foundation and a multiple Paul Harris Fellow, Ed was known not only for his professional excellence but also for his generosity and passion for strengthening the local community.

“Ed’s professionalism, enthusiasm, and volunteer spirit touched a great number of people in Onslow County and throughout the region,” said Thomas Giffin, Executive Director of the Onslow Memorial Hospital Foundation. “Through his many volunteer efforts, Ed recognized the critical need to strengthen the supply of talented nurses in Onslow County, and he understood the vital role these unsung heroes play in supporting our local hospital.”

The scholarship program will begin with a $6,000 award from the OMH Foundation Board to Coastal Carolina Community College, with the goal of expanding funding through partnerships with corporate sponsors and other community stakeholders.

“Throughout his life, Ed Garris was renowned for his ethical financial practices and his impeccable service to both his clients and his community,” Giffin added. “Perhaps more importantly, Ed utilized his infectious smile and positive attitude while being part of our lives and accomplishing numerous unselfish acts of kindness.”

Onslow Memorial Hospital, a nationally accredited 162-bed medical facility and an affiliate of UNC Health Care, continues to serve the Jacksonville and greater Onslow County community. The Ed Garris Nursing Scholarship will stand as a lasting tribute to a man whose legacy of service and leadership will continue to make a meaningful impact.
